Benin

Stretched in shape between the Niger River in the north and the coastal plain in the south, the relief of the whole country is not very rugged.

The north of the country is mainly made up of savannas and semi-arid mountains, such as the Atacora range, which extends to Togo and Ghana on the one hand and to Niger on the other9. The highest point in the country is Mount Sokbaro (or Sagbarao) (800 meters).

The south of the country is made up of a low coastal plain dotted with swamps, lakes and lagoons, in particular the lower Ouémé valley, the Porto-Novo lagoon and Lake Nokoué, a vast wetland of 91,600 ha recognized as international importance by the Ramsar Convention.

Most of the population lives on the southern coastal plains, the altitude of which nowhere exceeds 10 m9. This is where Benin's largest cities are concentrated, including Porto-Novo, the official capital, and Cotonou, the economic and political capital.
